Sally,

I can definitely relate. Delayed gratification is one of the hardest things that I've struggled with. It's just human nature. So how can people get over this? I think that you've touched on it a little bit. Having goals/dreams is a must. Essentially people have to change their mindset.

But how can you change your mindset IF everyone around you is a shopaholic??? Easy, you just change the people you hang around with! I don't necessarily mean cut-out your friends from your life, but you have to make a concerted effort to seek out better influences. You said that your boyfriend influenced you, now imagine if all your friends or the people that you converse with the most had the same mentality...it would hard NOT to be frugal, because you'd feel left out.

The one piece of advice that I've taken to heart is this: The people that you hang out with and the books you read are the influences in your life. Two things will happen, either they will influence you or you will influence them. The choice is yours.

So hard for me to save! So hard for a good majority of us to save....I can't really save if I wanted to right now because I don't currently work. But back in the day it was very difficult. There's always something I NEED NOW! I can almost ALWAYS justify NEEDING IT NOW. I could wait and eat at home but I am hungry now, what if I faint from hunger on my drive home? Yeah, better eat out. Buying make-up...need I remind you that when I see the world, the world sees me too? The outfit I'm wearing today is sooo last week! Need a new one! The list goes on and on. I personally know people who never in their life have saved a penny, living their life in the now. Never once thinking about the future! They buy things simply because they just got paid and can. Buying about 2 or 3 DVDs every paycheck....AH!
MOTIVATION! I think it's hard to motivate people who have NO DREAMS...How can you be motivated if you have no ambition? Those are the types of people I have grown up around...though I have dreams, it's quite hard to imagine they COULD come true! The only reason I feel it is possible to achieve dreams is because my boyfriend has helped me achieve one of them!
