For those of you that have been following our site, I just wanted to give you all a quick update since we have not posted anything since last week. Don’t worry we have not abandoned you–our loyal reader! We’ve just been really busy! While it doesn’t seem like we’ve done anything, I can assure you that we have been working hard (in the background) to make sure that this community offers something valuable and presents a point of view that is uniquely ours. Something that we believe in. Something that we are passionate about.
What We’ve Been Up To
For starters, you can read our newly revised “About” page. We felt that this needed a revision because when we initially started this blog, our vision was to build a community that was focused on personal finance and investing. However as with most projects, this idea began to evolve and grow in reach.
If you haven’t already noticed, we are huge supporters of KIVA and really admire what they are trying to achieve. Throughout these past couple of months our interest in microlending or microfinance has grown and in our research we stumbled across this microfinance competition. To make matters worse, we came up with an extremely viable idea for the competition. We were so sure that it would win. We were immediately consumed.
The Inevitable
As we began working out the details of our idea and began to dig some more, we found an Innovations article in the MIT press journal that Matt Flannery (CEO and Co-Founder of Kiva) wrote earlier this year. Within that essay, as Matt outlined Kiva’s successes, failures, and business model, the inevitable came. Our innovative microfinance solution just seemed to good to be true. In the end, it turns out that Kiva has already adopted a model that is strikingly similar to ours. We were crushed to say the least.
Lessons Learned
For me and my brother, blogging is a completely new venture so from the very first moment when we decided to give this a try we knew that we would be stumbling forward. Ever since then, I have learned several important lessons and have discovered a part of me that I never really knew existed. My desire to live a life of legacy and delve into the microfinance world is a strong one. I have also learned what it means to be the gatekeeper of this community and the responsibility that it entails.
What You Can Expect
If you are reading this, then should know that this community is for you, just as much as it is for us. That being said, you can expect new posts here every Tuesday-Friday by 3:00 PST and you can expect that our posts will mainly be covering personal finance, investing and microlending. You should also assume that our desire to do some good and make change in this world is the driving force within each post, paragraph, word and letter.
Personal responsibility should never be segregated with social responsibility. They are one and the same. You are a part of my world just as much as I am a part of yours–no matter who you are or where you live in this world. So let’s all do each other a favor and help ourselves. This must be where it always begins. It begins with you. It begins with me.
